How UV Light Fights COVID-19
[Our Podcast: Episode 8]
We’re back in action after the pandemic: In our new episode of the Energy Sense podcast, we’re talking ultraviolet light and COVID-19.

Using ultraviolet light for disinfecting has been around for decades. But people are taking a new look as they fight the COVID-19 pandemic, and think about the future of disinfecting, work environments and public health.

We’ve been exploring this technology as it intersects with LED lighting, which could provide a more efficient and less expensive vehicle for the UVC rays.

You can find the Energy Sense podcast on most podcasting platforms — Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio and TuneIn.

Thanks to everyone who joined us Tuesday for our UV-C Lighting Webinar. In case you missed it — no problem. We’ve posted a free replay.

In this 20-minute webinar, we cover the basics of how UV-C lighting is used and dive into some of the applications to pay attention to, especially regarding the battle against coronaviruses.

UV-C lighting will play a big part in assisting building owners and managers with providing a safe and healthy work environment and contribute to re-opening our economy effectively and safely getting people back to work.

If you have any questions, or have an idea for us to explore in a future webinar, please drop me an email.

What Is Bipolar Ionization?

You might hear this new term emerging in the fight against COVID-19. There are a lot of manufacturers in this space and I’m not hanging my hat on one or the other.

But this is a technology that should be considered when evaluating a coronavirus-response retro-fit to your existing building or when you’re building out a new space.

Here’s a summary I’ve put together based on a presentation from AtmosAir/Johnson Controls.

3 Power Moves

  1. COAL TURNING POINT: For the first time in more than 130 years (pictured above), renewable energy has “toppled coal in energy generation in the United States. ... Not since wood was the main source of American energy in the 19th century has a renewable resource been used more heavily than coal, but 2019 saw a historic reversal.”

  2. GERM BLASTERS: Ford has created software to sanitize police SUVs. It raises interior temps to 133 degrees for 15 minutes — “hot enough and long enough to kill more than 99% of disease causing germs in the vehicle, including the coronavirus, according to Ford.”

  3. VIRTUAL PERMITTING: Clean energy projects are getting people back to work and can be done under social-distancing guidelines. But what about permits? The executive director of the Virginia Energy Efficiency Council, Chelsea Harnish, writes that “counties like Fairfax and Arlington are leading the way with virtual permitting.”
